Here is a cost affective LIST OF EQUIPMENT that will supply the beginning phases of your box with exactly what it needs.
This is a conservative list that suggests to add more equipment as you grow your clientele and add the specialty items as you gain more advanced athlete’s. Remember, you do not need a “fully loaded” box to open your doors so don’t be afraid to postpone certain purchases until you have the profit to buy them with.
Every box MUST have whiteboards. It’s a staple to any box. They are useful and necessary to keep track of athlete’s scores, post news, post WOD’s and share artwork (ok,maybe not the last one.)
To get started, you can get by with one big whiteboard to post your WOD’s. After all, our sport's roots are humble and Greg Glassman probably did not have twenty custom whiteboards in his garage gym. Home Depot has long sheets of “whiteboard material” that cost around $25 for 4’ by 8’. If your budget is on the smaller side and you don’t have the cash for customized whiteboards with your logo on them (or you simply enjoy the bare bones vibe) this is a great option. You can always upgrade your whiteboards down the line when the revenue starts to flow.
If you do have room in your budget for custom whiteboards, consider investing in a PR/Max board, a Goal board, a Benchmark Leader board, The Girls Leaderboard, or a Hero WOD Leaderboard. These boards help athletes keep track of their progress and can inspire them to work hard so they can appear on one or all of the Leaderboards.

Cost Effective Tips When Purchasing Equipment
- If you find a local vendor who sells brand name equipment, you can save a fortune on shipping. It is well worth the road trip if you are able to drive to the vendor and pick up the equipment yourself.
- Home Depot has long sheets of “whiteboard material” that cost around $25 for 4’ by 8’. You can use them just like a normal whiteboard by writing with a dry erase marker. While you are there, buy duct tape in the colors of your logo and line the perimeter of the whiteboard material with the colored tape. Once it is hung on a freshly painted wall, it looks just as good as any custom whiteboard.
- Buy dry erase markers on eBay. In stores, they average $1/marker. On eBay you can find markers for .45 cents/marker.
